In a bid to support the Nigerian Fire Service, the Niger Delta Development Commission over the weekend donated some fire fighting equipment to Imo State command.
Handing over the two fire tankers of 20,000 litres, one fire fighter and one fire engine with turntable ladder, the NDDC contractor said that the commission decided to assist all the fire service departments in all the Niger Delta states comprising of Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Imo among others. The contractor further stated that fire service is a vital sector of the economy that deserves effective allocation and care as they are like medical experts who saves lives and property and urged the Imo fire service to be devoted to their duties.
Expressing his gratitude, the Acting Director, Imo state fire service, Sir A.D Okeoma on behalf of Imo State Government and the ministry of works thanked NDDC for their kind gestures towards them. Sir Okeoma said that the gesture is first of its kind since the colonization of Nigeria as a federation, stressing that the staff are happy seeing such gigantic equipments that cost fortune. He further highlighted that the operations of the fire service in the state will now be running simultaneously when the need arises, pointing out that with the apparatus, all the other divisions in the zones will be carried along and assisted, unlike before.
Continuing, Sir Okeoma advised the general public to desist from anything capable of generating the outbreak of fire as the harmattan season is near. He advised against burning bushes around the house and to always put off electrical appliances when not in use. He also advice house owners to always create an escape route while building houses. The Director lamented lack of adequate staff to enable them discharge their humanitarian service effectively.
