Members of Imo House of Assembly have threatened to bare their fangs on the Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, includ threatening to impeach him, if he dares go ahead with his statement that Traditional Rulers in Imo State, will screen Commissioner Nominees, after the House of Assembly had finished their own screening of the nominees.
Information available to this Newspaper indicate that the entire House saw the statement from the Governor as an affront on the Legislature, and for the first time, have resolved to rise up to their responsibilities, should Governor Okorocha go ahead to ask Traditional Rulers to screen politicians for Commissionership positions.
Most of the House of Assembly members who spoke to Trumpeta under anonymity asked under which Law the Monarchs would screen the politicians, adding that there is no such Law in the State, and if Governor Okorocha does that he has committed an impeachable offence, and would not be spared.
One of the high-ranking member of the House who spoke to Trumpeta said that the House has been cooperating with the Governor (Executive) does not mean that the Lawmakers have been bought over or that they are weaklings, but only making sure that there is peace for the Governor to carryout his responsibilities to Imo people, but however added that he should not push them to the wall.
It would be recalled that Governor Okorocha, while celebrating his 51st birthday with Traditional Rulers in the State told them that they will be part of the screening exercise of the new Commissioner nominees.
However, political pundits who spoke to this Newspaper said what Okorocha did that day was just a “political statement” of “Freudian slip” and has no such power to ask Traditional Rulers to screen politicians.
But despite the rantings from the House of Assembly members, most of Imo citizens who spoke to Trumpeta said that even if Okorocha decides to go ahead with such decision of Traditional Rulers Screening Politicians, the present Imo House of Assembly has no balls to call him to order.
According to Dr Fabian Iheanacho “Which House of Assembly are you talking about? Was it not the same House who gave Okorocha free hand for four years to spend our money on the rolling Budget or what do they call it? These sets of Legislators have failed us”.
The University Don went on to say that the House of Assembly is yet to explain to Imo people how abortion Law passed through the House without Imo people knowing.
Meanwhile, the embattled Imo citizens are waiting to see between Governor Okorocha and the House of Assembly who would call the shots first.
“Well, let us wait and see. Let us see if truly the Governor will ask Traditional Rulers to screen politicians. And if he does, let us see if the House of Assembly will live up to their threats” Bar Anselm Nwanegbo told Trumpeta.
