Library Relocation Imo NASU, NLC Disagree with Okorocha . Commends IMHA Intervention

Sequel to the controversial and fire brand attempt by the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to relocate the Imo state Library out of his present location to an obscure area of Owerri town, the state chapter of the Non Academics staff Union (NASU) Nigeria Library Union (NLU) at the weekend expressed their disagreement and rejection of Okorocha’s plan and pattern.
Addressing a press conference at the Library Conference hall, the Imo state NASU Chairman, who doubles as the state NLC vice Chairman, Nze J Obinna, declared that the governor’s decision is unacceptable by the two Unions which he represent, submitting that the library belongs to all Imolites not the governor as he only supretends over Imo properties. He explained that the Governor should have consulted widely for the opinion of the staff and the people before taking such a decision, stressing that the welfare of the staff, security of the properties should been considered and all avenue of dialogue exhausted before the purported evacuation attempt.
Reacting on the supposed new site at Area N New Owerri, Nze Obinna holds that the place will be counter productive, because the said house/building can not accommodate the staff and properties of the Imo library. He went further to disclose that library is not a make shift structure, both in architectural design, planning and execution should depict library in space, security, accommodation of books (shelves) above all libraries are centrally located for accessibility.
Consequently, the labour leader, berated the state government for having done nothing to improve the standard of the Imo Library with all the hullabaloo of free education, “when states like Abia state is busy establishing E-library, we are here demolishing our own for panking lot”, he regretted.
Nze Obinna also gave a hard knock on the acting Director of the Imo state library service, Mr Ndukuku Chimezie for supporting the action of the governor without considering the effect on his staffers, when he himself has no official vehicle and knows too well that the establishment is not well funded.
The union leader, however commended the prompt and people oriented intervention of the Imo State House of Assembly on the resolution to have aborted the evacuation attempt by the state governor. He adviced the governor to have a rethink, if he timely lone education and improve the standard of the library its staffer with modern books and proper finding, then consult properly and widely if the library should be relocated
