Amuzi Honors Prof. Onwuliri
With Victory Over Orlu
Players of Amuzi Community in the ongoing Prof. Onwuliri Charity Football competition on Sunday May 2 honored the Late Prof. by defeating their counterparts from Orlu to mark his one year dearth anniversary.
Speaking to Trumpeta Sports desk after the game, team coordinator Mr. Alex Chigozie Eke expressed joy over his team’s first victory in the tournament pointing out that the victory is very significant as his team and the entire Amuzi community marks the 365th day (One year) after Prof’s dearth.
In his own statement the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman, Hon. Samuel Nkem Otuibe (Mola) revealed that Monday June 3 marked one year officially that Prof Onwuliri. Left this world to be with the Lord. He recalled how Nigeria lost great men and women to an ill-fated DANA air mishap in Lagos last year which also included a great son of Amuzi.
It would be recalled that on May 12 a charity football competition was kicked-off in Amuzi Central Primary School field by his family to mark his one year memorial anniversary.
The competition is for the three LGA’s of Mbaise including his home town Amuzi and the other four sporting zones in the state.
Two games were played during the weekend with Amuzi beating Orlu 1 0 which technically means that Orlu is out after winning one game and losing two. In the other game decided on Sunday Okigwe pummeled Oru zone by 4 1 to enhance their chances of making it to the semifinal stage.
After the Saturday victory Amuzi will have to wait for the outcome of the encounter between Ahiazu and Aboh to determine who qualifies for the semis as draw will mean Amuzi’s exit while victory for Ahiazu will see them go through.
World Cup Qualifier: Keshi Banks On God To Beat Kenya
Nigeria’s coach Stephen Keshi has gone spiritual with Nigeria’s FIFA world cup qualifier against Kenya after declaring that God is on Super Eagles side against the Harambe Stars this Wednesday.
Keshi and his team surprised the continent by winning the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in February and Keshi believes the team stillhas divine support as they seek to reach the 2014 global showpiece in Brazil.
Discountenanced by many before the cup of Nations and rated nowhere near the likes of Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana’s Black Stars, Keshi’s Eagles overcame an uninspiring start with focus and determination and swept to glory’
“I am not saying anything (about Wednesday’s match) except to say that God is working with us and we will be prepared for this match. The focus is there and we have the determination to get a good result.
“We showed good stuff against Mexico despite missing a number of players and we will even be strong in Nairobi,” Keshi was quoted as saying in a statement by Ademola Olajire Assistant Director (Media), Nigeria Football Federation on Sunday as the Nigeria delegation boarded the plane in Houston to fly back to Frankfurt, Germany.
In Frankfurt, influential midfielders John Mikel Obi Fegor Ogude and Russia-based forward Ahmed Musa will join the squad for the flight to East Africa. The team was scheduled to aboard a Lufthansa Airline flight to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) on Monday night, before connecting an Ethiopian Airline flight to Nairobi, arriving in the Kenya capital in the early hours of today.
The NFF has been working assiduously with the High Commission of Nigeria in Nairobi to monitor arrangements and possible schemes by the hosts, and an NFF advance party flew into the Kenya capital on Sunday morning.
Rangers Enter Caf Cup Money Spining Stage, Drawn In Group A
Rangers International of Enugu on Sunday edged out defending champions CS Sfaxien to qualify for the group stage of the confederation cup 2013 edition.
The team that was denied the services of Super Eagles duo goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim and attacking midfielder Sunday Mba held the current Tunisian league champions to a goalless draw in the second leg of round of 16 games played over the weekend.
The Flying Antelopes won the first leg in Enugu 1 0 a forth night ago and looked like they will not make it when the home team was awarded a penalty which they couldn’t convert as Rangers stood their ground to earn a valuable draw on away soil.
The six time Nigerian league champions will play in group A alongside St. George of Ethiopia, Etoil du Sahel of Tunisia and Stade Malian of Mali.
They will play their first game against Etoil during the weekend of 19 21 July in Enugu and will have the opportunity of fortifying their team with five new players before the start of the group matches.
In group B TP Mazembe of Congo will challenge North African opposition FUS Rabat of Morocco, Entente Setif of Alhgeria and CA Bizerte of Tunisia.
Rangers are the sole survivors from Nigerian campaign in this year’s continental games as Heartland, Kano Pillars and Lobi Stars were all eliminated after the second round games.
