As the country is still grieving over incessant gunmen attack believed to be orchestrated by Boko Haram extremists in the Northern parts of the country, tertiary institutions in Imo State may turn to war zone if Tuesday’s event in Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo-Ohaji, is anything to go by.
There was pandemonium and confusion in Imopoly campus, Umuagwo, when unknown gunmen believed to be cultists shot at a female student. The incident which happened at the bus-stop area of school on Owerri-PortHarcourt road saw students and workers scamper for safety when the gun boomed.
According to reports, the victim, a female student (names withheld) had finished her exams and joined other colleagues to trek to the school to board a motorcycle or vehicle to her abode off campus. On the way, she was accosted by some young men before one of them opened fire on her. She was immediately rushed to the school clinic where she was treated and later transferred to another hospital for proper and further treatment.
As at the time of this report, this newspaper was unavailable to find out the true state of her health as unconfirmed reports have it that the female student may not be alive after the gunshot.
Confirming the incident to Imo Trumpeta, a top management staff of the institution who does not want her name in print said cultists indeed attacked the institution, but stated that the female student was not their target as she was hit by a bullet and rushed to the hospital.
