A stunning scientific revelation was made at the 30th public lecture of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FFUTO) Imo State Faulting the use of the Niger Delta concept in Nigeria while alluding to the lower Niger Delta
The research lecture titled “Rivers River Deltas and Nigerias Niger Delta: Scientific or Political Concepts” by professor Chukwuemekanim Sylvester Nwadiaro was delivered a professor of fisheries and hydrobiology.
He noted that a river delta is a geomorphologic scientific terminology and not a political petroleum industry derivative concept.
Accordingly, the lower Niger Delta has features common with other deltas of the world’s rivers stressing that crude oil and gas industry activities are not a globalized characteristic of deltaic land formations
Prof. Nwadiaro then argued that the phrase Niger Delta as used from inception is scientifically wrong and should revert to lower Niger Delta to distinguish it from the middle Niger Delta in Mail.
The University don observed that Abia, Akwa – Ibom, Cross River and Ondo States are regarded as oil mineral producing states and wondered whether Cross River State by its inclusion has now become an oil mineral producing state?
He further explained that based on the exposition of the pattern of geomorphologic origin of rivers springs, stream among others a summary of the hydrological cycle, the drainage of rivers are defined just like their catchments which constitute the surname of that river.
