In what appears more like an epoch-making event in the annals of history of Umuagwo autonomous community, Ohaji in Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo State, an elaborate ceremony to usher in newly elected Town Union executive was held.
The first of its kind in the town, a new executive of the Umuagwo Town Union Development, UTDU was marked.
It would be recalled that on December 30th, 2023, the High Chief Chukwudi Anufuro led Electoral Committee held election that saw Chief Nicholas Amadi emerge victorious.
Speaking at the event which attracted well meaning indigenes of the towns, High Chief Chukwudi Anufuro stated that the event is remarkable considering that it was not only tensed but a transition period the town was able to overcome in good condition.
He said that though it was challenging to conduct the election but the success was the ultimate hence the elaborate celebration to usher in the newly elected Exco of the town.
High Chief Anufuro enjoined the newly elected to do more to justify the efforts of the town to have a new executive. He added that the town needs more development which is a big task to be done.
Speaking at the event, a former president of the UTDU, Sir Vitals Aguguo (KSJI), admonished the new Exco to look into the challenges facing the community at the moment and exploit it to make impeccable marks on the sands of time.
Sir Aguguo noted that the community needs attention in several areas the Exco needs to respond to.
Also, a prominent son of the area, Sir Kelechi Mejuobi (KSJI) while congratulating the new Exco enjoined them to imbibe best practices in community administration to ensure that Umuagwo Town is developed.
Sir Mejuobi further said advised the new Exco to carry along all strata of the town including the women, youths and traditional institution.
In his inaugural speech, Chief Amadi, who holds the title of Omenkeahurunanya of Umuagwo and on second term reeled out achievements he made during the last three years.
He said that despite challenges, there was stable peace and the COVID and Anti SARS protests saw Umuagwo Town in peace to the extent that the Umuagwo police station that serves as Ohaji Divisional Police office wasn’t touched.
He said that the issue of electricity had been handled courtesy of some able sons of the town who made it possible.
On what to expect, he said that the Oha Umuagwo institution shall be strengthened in line with the customs and traditions of the town, same as reinvigorating the Village Chief status that had been in existence before now.
He talked about clean up exercise and other means of raising revenue for the town union. The PG warned against illegal levies and dues by unauthorized persons in the community.
Apart from disclosing what his Exco has in stock, Chief Amadi asked for the support of all to ensure the town moves forward.
The event was attended by who is who in the town including, Sir Mejuobi, a co-publisher and Director of Trumpeta newspapers.
