GLO WINS NPL SPONSORSHIP BATTLE

Nigerian Telecommunication giant, Globacom seems to have won the much elongated war over who is the official Sponsor of the Nigerian Premier League (NPL). It is believed that NPL’s interim management Committee and Globacom will officially enter into a title partnership deal on February 1. Imo Trumpeta Sports desk has gathered that the February 1 date set aside for signing the title sponsorship contract will further affirm the kick-off date of February 16 for the 2012/13 NPL season. An inside source did also reveal that NPL and Globacom will enter into a four-year title partnership deal on February 1, worth 2.6 billion Naira (around 41 million dollars). Globacom is expected to present a cheque worth 650 million Naira (around 41 million dollars) as payment for the first year of the four year title partnership. A row over the title partnership began in December 2009 when the NPL awarded another telecom firm, MTN the sponsorship rights following its superior 2.6 billion bid over Globacom’s 1 billion. But a statement released by the NPL’s LMC on Thursday night (Last week) did make the matter look over. “All parties have agreed to withdraw all pending matters in court associated with the title sponsorship of the Premier League. Total Promotions Limited agreed to withdraw their claims to the rights of the title sponsorship of the Premier League. Globacom being the preferred bidder has accepted to take up the title sponsorship rights. Consequently, Globacom will now be the official title sponsor of the League on the same terms agreed during the last exercise “the release stated. Globacom was the title sponsors of the NPL before it pulled out of the deal citing unfavourable conditions.
