The violent situation in Imo State continued on Wednesday (yesterday) as men described as Unknown Gunmen attacked police men on duty at Umuohii, Ihitte Okwe, in Ngor Okpala LGA, Imo State, along the Aba/Owerri Express way.
Trumpeta learnt that the Armed Hoodlums, who took on the Police men unawares, began to shoot indiscriminately, immediately they arrived the Police check point.
This Newspaper learnt that the swift operation took the life of Two Police Men, (one male and a female) and one official of Vehicle Inspectorate Organization, VIO.
Sources said that after carrying out the heinous act, the Attackers sped off towards Ihitte junction, and disappeared before Police reinforcement could give them a chase.
Trumpeta learnt that the incident caused a heavy gridlock along the Aba/Owerri road, between the Airport junction and Ihitte, as all passengers were asked to disembark, while the Vehicles drove pass, without Commuters inside.
An eye witness said that the Gunmen came with a Siena Vehicle, while the unsuspecting Police thought they were the usual Transport Vehicle until they took them by surprise and mauled three people down and sped away.
Some people who spoke to Trumpeta expressed sympathy for the police men killed, saying they security men are doing good job on the road, which they said had reduced crime on that axis, and asked that those who carried out the act should be fished out by security operatives immediately.
Some of the commuters who were held on the road for hours lamented that the Aba/Owerri Express way has remained peaceful, because of the constant presence of police check points on the Road.
“The checkpoints may be many, but the police men on this road are very jovial and doing their jobs with human face, especially that female Police Officer. Why would anybody attack people protecting lives and property?
This is the height of wickedness” Dr Ephraim Nwosu said.
However, calls to the Imo Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye were not picked at the time of going to Press time. When chatted on WASAP! he did not respond.
