The torch for the 18th National Sports Festival, Eko 2012, arrived Owerri from Bayelsa amid celebrations by the Imo athletes and officials.
Present to receiver the torch at the Dan Anyiam Stadium was the Deputy Governor, Sir Jude Agbaso, the officials from the State Ministry of Sports as well as athletes who are billed to represent the state at the sports festival this November.
Speaking after receiving the Torch, the deputy governor expressed the happiness of the Imo State Government that the Torch has finally made it to the state after crossing other states.
He stated that the Torch symbolizes the unity that exist among Nigerians and urged that the principles of the Nationals Sports Festival be maintained.
Sir Jude Agbaso pleaded with all the sports stakeholders in the state to join their hands together to ensure that the state performs well in Lagos state.
After the Deputy Governor’s speech, the Unity Torch left Owerri for Anambra State in continuation of its nation wide.
It would be recalled that the Torch had arrived Umuahia, Abia State last Tuesday were it was received by the State Governor his Excellency, Chief Theodore Orji (Ochendu) and moved on to Rivers State and Bayelsa State over the weekend before moving to Owerri, Imo State.
Meanwhile, the Imo Athletes are expected to kick off their camping exercise this week as promised by the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Kenneth Emelu.
The State is expected to participate in 25 Sporting activities including the Special Sports.
