The 22nd inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) took place at the Prof. Celestine Onwuliri International Conference Center at the University premises last Monday where a new energy technology was unveiled. Erudite scholar, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Enyioma Anyanwu in his lecture tilted “New Energy Technology Revolution: A Catalyst for Sustainable National Development” cautioned on the over whelming dependence on non-renewable sources of energy due to its serious challenges to the environmental and socio-economic well being of the oil producing communities and deleterious imparts on the global ecosystem and the finite nature of the energy source.
The Professor of Mechanical Engineering concluded that there is an urgent and complete need to re-evaluate theNigeriacountry’s energy production and consumption strategies by emphasizing on meeting sizable share of the requirements from the new energy sources in addition to the use of mere energy efficient technologies. In his words “in fact a new energy technology revolution is currently underway. This revolution is base on the limitless power of the sun. Other infinite renewables such as wind energy, bio-energy, marine energy and nuclear energy as the basis for sustainable national development. This transition to cleaner and more secure energy consumption is necessary to slow down climate change and its dire consequences of flooding, desertification, dislocation of our agricultural practices thus impacting food security etc”
The Dean of the school of Engineering and Engineering Technology, FUTO advised the Nigerian government in his recommendation; to take a clue from the trend worldwide to produce a separate new clean energy technology legistation or policy framework with achievable target for progressive investment in it and meeting Green House Gases (GHG) emission reduction levels, to establish a Renewable Energy Commission and it Regulatory Agency like NACE, to fast track development of Renewable Energy Power Plant Industries among other recommendation.
The highlight of the lecture was the presentation of a “Macho man” Plague by the deputy vice chancellor (Administration) of FUTO on behalf of the University to the 22nd inaugural lecturer.
The lecture was well attended by erudite scholars, Professors, Deans, Head of Department, Lecturers, Ndi ezes, Students of Engineering within and outside Imo state.
