Speaker emeritus of the Imo State House Assembly, Rt. Hon Goodluck Nanah Opiah has given reasons why he wrote a personal letter to the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.
According to the ex-speaker, the abandonment of the people of the area ravaged by flood by the state government and indifference attitude of the Governor to the plight of displaced citizens prompted the letter which was sent to the office of the Governor of the state a week ago.
Chief Opiah noted that in view of the hardship faced by the people affected by the flood, it was important to inform the state government that “my people lost several millions of naira in property, food crops, fish ponds and farmlands.
Thousands of my people were displaced from their homes and farmlands and they are without food and medication. And the state government is yet to provide camps for the displaced persons as was done by Governors of other affected states”
The former Speaker regretted that in the face of the calamity, his people have neither the consolation nor the assurances of succour from the state government. He said the continued neglect of the people makes “my people think if we are still part of those being governed by Governor Okorocha”
While asking the Governor to take immediate steps to address the anomaly which has completely alienated the people of the area from governance in the state, Chief Opiah informed the Governor that the Deputy Speaker, House of Reps, Emeka Ihedioha, Foreign Affairs Minister, Viola Onwuliri, former Governor Ikedi Ohakim and Senator Hope Uzodimma had visited the people where they made cash and material donations.
