Fresh Verification Hits Imo Civil Service, Workers Panic

By Okey Alozie
Fresh verification of workers commenced last week at the state secretariat, Owerri located along Porthacourt road Owerri.
Our reporter gathered that forms were given to workers to fill and submit without delay.
The workers are required by the authority to write their political ward, local government of origin, date of employment, age and other vital information.
Information revealed that the verification may not be unconnected to suspected plot from government house to down size the civil service and make it more result oriented.
We further gathered the past employments were not balanced as many local governments and political wards were shortchanged by the past administration. The present administration led by Senator Hope Uzodinma wants to balance the equation now.
Report revealed that many of those claimed to be employed have no employment records as there are indications that their employment did not follow due process, or came through the back door.
Our source from government house disclosed that the governor recently raised eyebrows on high wage bill he is paying in Imo adding that the amount is outrageous.
We were informed that the Governor had also concluded plan to our source and concession some departments and ministry in the civil service for administrative convenience.
Meanwhile, the workers are planning to down their tools any moment from now over non- payment of salaries.
It was gathered that warning strike will start before the end of this month before they will embark on indefinite strike because of government refusal to treat them well.
The labour in the state is said to have held series of meetings with government on the workers’ salaries, still government has refused to pay. Instead, the governor and those in authority now embarked on fresh verification alleged to be targeting at downsizing of the labour force in the state.
