Imo State government has intensified efforts towards the prevention of the world’s deadly Covid-19 pandemic, by ordering the closure of Motor Parks, Church activities, Markets and other social gatherings.
The governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma gave the instruction yesterday as the quest for strigent health measures have become paramount.
In a media release obtained by Trumpeta newspaper, signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachukwu, the order was with immediate effect.
That was an effort of the state government in containing the spread of the virus in Imo.
According to the government press release, the governor had earlier announced a lockdown of the state, as well as prohibited activities in churches, markets, marriages, burial ceremonies, among others.
In reinforcing the directive, Uzodinma ordered that vehicles operating within the State be stopped henceforth, and ordered that all motor parks be shut forthwith.
Trumpeta correspondent who monitored activities within Owerri metropolis yesterday witnessed stiff resistance between street traders and security operatives.
At the early hours of Monday, some streets in Owerri, MCC road, Ikenegbu, Amakohia axis were like dejected places following an enforcement of the government’s directive promoting social distancing.
The traders who insisted on displaying their wares along the streets were flogged and pursued by both the army, police and other security outfits.
However, uncertainty has continued to enclave the opening date of the order as it remain indefinite.
