FLAMINGOES RAISES HOPE OF QUALIFICATION WITH 11 – 0 WHITE WASH OF AZERBAIJAN.

Nigerian Under 17 female football team (Flamingoes) on Tuesday trashed hostAzerbaijan11 – 0 in their second game of the on going FIFA U – 17 Women World Cup.

Earlier on Saturday, the flamingoes held a very resilient Canadian side to a 1 – 1 draw to make their second game a most win.

Right from the beginning of the game, the Nigerians took it straight to their opponents and it was no surprise when the first goal came as Chinwendu Ihezuo capitalized on a mistake made by the Host defense off Mabel Effiom’s cross.

At that point, it became crystal clear that the hosts couldn’t handleNigeria’s pace or physicality as the second goal came, then the third within 8 minutes as it started raining goals for the Flamingoes.

Ihezuo, the Pelican stars top striker recorded 5 goals in the game that equalled the highest scoring game in the tournament (N/Korea 11 – 0 Gambia) as some say it was a pay back for the African humiliation Gambia suffered in the hands of North – Korea.

Harlimat Ayinde also recorded two goals in the eleven goal thriller that has assured the exit of the host team from the 3 week championship.

 

Ihezuo has now scored 6 goals in two games so far and is in good running for the tournaments top short.

Reacting after the game,Azerbaijancoach, Sissy Raith, accepted defeat with the following words, “So far, we have played againstNigeriaandColombiaand in these countries women’s football has been around there for 20 or 30 years – it has been there for generations. We need those generations, we also need that type of time,” said Raith

With this result,Nigerianow has 4 points withCanadawho defeatedColombia1 – 0, but the Flamingoes are on top of the log and will need to beatColombiaon Saturday to finish top of group A.
