MBAISE UNITY CUP KICKS OFF.


The 2012 edition of the annual Mbaise Unity football competition kicked off on Sunday the 16th of September, at the central school field Amuzi

Although the opening ceremony was disrupted by the rain, it however did not take the shine of the colorful show that was displayed by the host town near St Jude Catholic church Amuzi.

The competition which is in its 7th edition has remained a yearly event since 2007, that has continued to attract lots of teams from within Mbaise, Owerri, Okigwe even out side the state.

 

In the opening game, the defending champions, Desert warriors of Enyiogugu played a 0 – 0 draw with two time champions Obodo Ahiara FC in a very thrilling encounter.

Speaking to Imo Trumpeta after the game, Mr. Njoku Chukwuma (Akaekpuchi Onwa), a philanthropist and donor of the cup did express his gratitude to God who has continued to grant him the ability to continue pushing the annual event.

“My desire has always been to give back to the society which played a vital role in my growing – up and I felt the only way was to put up something that will bring every one in Amuzi and the entire Mbaise together and make them happy.

The competition over this past six years have been celebrated as a period of Joy and has helped to keep our youths busy especially in their God’s given talent exposing them to the lime light” stated Chukwuma.

This year’s trophy will be competed for by 12 teams comprising 4 groups of 3 teams each. Two teams are expected to qualify for the quarter final at the end of the group stages.
