Worried that the zone risk losing the Governorship in the 2019 general elections, the leaders of Owerri zone have- put a step forward in reducing the frightening number of Governorship aspirants from the zone.
The move was made open over the weekend when the leadership of the major socio-political groups lead by Owerri Peoples Assembly (OPA) meet with aspirants of the different political parties at the Empire Hotel, Port-Harcourt road, Owerri.
Leading the pack was the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) which is parading no fewer than fifteen Governorship aspirants from Owerri zone leaving a meagree five for Okigwe and Orlu zones.
Impeachable sources revealed to Trumpeta Newspapers that OPA under the leadership of Mr Paschal Dozie and Chief Sam Obaji among others had invited the aspirants under different parties to sensitize them on the urgent need to reduce their numbers ahead of the primaries for the single reason of winning the general election.
This newspaper gathered that part of the strategy of the committee is to form temporary political blocks not more than two aspirants in any of the political parties would emerge.
The major three blocks are Mbaike, Owerri Federal Constituency/Ngor Okpala and finally the Mbaise block. Investigation further revealed that (OPA) is to extract a binding commitment from the aspirants concerning the final outcome and enlistment of the preferred aspirants.
Although our source said that the aspirants from the various political parties were given the leverage to go and choose among themselves and forward their lists to the committee not later than one week from the date.
But in event of inability of the aspirants to agree within themselves, that the committee would be left with no other option than to take decisions on their behalf. Part of the considerations we further gathered is public acceptance of an aspirant and his financial capacity.
