Imo state government has indicated its readiness to partner with an
Italian Non-Governmental Organization (OPERA DON BONIFACIO) on health
care delivery in the state.
The state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha who stated this when the
Health Team and Management of Opera Don Bonifacio called on him at the
Government House, Owerri commended them for their selfless
humanitarian health services to the people of the state.
Okorocha said that the state would synergize with the health
organization to tackle challenges in the health sector.
He disclosed that in order to improve the health needs of the people,
government embarked on the construction of 27 General Hospitals across
the state and a new Diagnostic centre.
The governor also disclosed government’s resolve for a regular salary
package of the state’s medical personnel, as encouragement for the
development of the health sector.
He urged the health organization to collaborate with Imo Foundation to
achieve harmonization and full operation and further enjoined them to
consider themselves as the state representatives in Italy and promised
to give any assistance within its reach to ensure sustainability of
the health partnership programme.
Earlier in a keynote address, the founder of OPERA DON BONIFACIO, Rev.
Father Boniface Duru expressed satisfaction over infrastructural
transformation which he noted has taken place in the state and
commended Governor Okorocha for keeping faith with his promises.
Rev. Duru explained that his organization initiative programme ‘Azione
Verde’ would continue to reach out to the poor people’s health need in
the state and explained that the exercise has started since 20th
August, 2012 with over one thousand, six hundred (1600) patients from
Orlu zone.
He called on the state government to give more attention to the health
of the poor and downtrodden in the state which he noted as a serious
challenge facing the state, especially those suffering from diabetes
and high blood pressure.
