National Sports Commission (NSC) has approved Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF’s) events for the 18th National Sports Festival tagged “Eko 2012” slated forLagos.
The events that received the much awaited blessing of the NSC are, men single (masters, intermediate and opens), Double (masters, Intermediate and open), and team (masters, intermediate and open).
Also approved are women single (one category), double (one category) and team (one category).
According to NSF general Secretary, James Eakyns, winners of all the approved events would go home with gold medals while the second and third place finishers will have silver and bronze medals respectively.
He further stated that only states that are in good standing with NSF vis –a vis payment of dues will be allowed to participate in the events during the festival or any NSF sanctioned/approved activities.
It would be recalled that scrabble was left out of the last festival held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state but the Local Organising Committee, LOC, of the “Eko 2012” games headed by Deputy Governor Mrs. Adejoke Orelope Adefulire in the spirit of encouraging the growth of the game in the country included scrabble as medal winning sport for 2012 edition of the bi – annual championship.
Reports reaching “Imo Trumpeta” however indicates that Imo state Scrabble Association are doing everything possible to ensure that the state is well represented at the events come November.
