There are strong indications that the long awaited Local Government election in Imo State may hold nay time from July
Governor Rochas Okorocha on returning from his oversea trip last Thursday confirmed that LGA election will hold in no distant time. When contacted, the ISIEC boss Rt Hon Bar. Amechi Nwoha told Trumpeta reporter in his office last week that the commission is ready for the election.
According to him, the commission will soon invite political parties for briefing and sensitization. He assured Imolites that the election will be free and fair, adding that there will be no room for compromise by his agency.
Before now, the election has suffered a lot of setbacks following the inability of Governor Okorocha to conduct the elections four years after assuming office as the Governor.
Although the matter is still in court, the council polls in the past have generated a lot of ripples in the state. Report shows that each time the council polls are mentioned in Imo, opposition groups raise eyebrows with a threat of boycott.
The move to conduct the council poll since 2011has remained a mirage as the PDP and other opposition parties see it as a deceit . They however accuse the rescue mission team led by Governor Rochas Okorocha of plotting to rig to his party’s favour. “It is a trick to consolidate power, Okorocha has secretly positioned his men to succeed themselves as executive chairmen of the LGAs”. One of the PDP chieftains declared.
Those who spoke in favour of the rescue mission government insisted that the election to produce the council chairmen and councilors are supposed to take place with or without PDP, adding that the LGA election is a rescheduled one. “It is not mandatory that every party should participate in the election” Imo concerned citizens advised.
