LATRINES: When provision is necessary for the disposal of excreta for such periods such as during camp simple earth latrines can be constructed. A deep hole is dug like a trench about six to eight feet deep over which is fitted a woden box with shapped sit and a lid to fit the top. Earth is provided to cover the excreta. Organissm in the soil soon render the excreta harmless but it must be covered to guard against flies for obvious reasons. Latrines should be placed as far away from the cockhouse and water supply as possible.
THE DEEP BORE LATRINES: An auger is used to bore a hole deep into the ground about 16inches in diameter and 18 feet deep. Some suitable form of superstructure is arranged over the top. It must have a concrete base and is fitted and is fitted with an ordinary latrine seat. Because of the depth of the hole the excreta does not attract flies and is disposed off daily by bacterial action and subsoil water.
One of the many problems associated with the conservency system is the disposal of waste water from the house ie water used for washing and cooking etc All waste water from the house should first pass through a grease trap or be treated with a special chemical which presipitate the grease, then one of 3 methods of disposal should be used.
The degreased waste water is run into a soakaway which consists of a deep hole filled with clinker and ashes covered with earth. After filtering through the clinker the waste runs away to become subsoil water.
The water can be piped away to a depth of about 3 feet through slightly porous pipes which allow the water to escape gradually into the subsoil water.
A cess-pool system can be used as a miniature sewer. This should be well away from dwelling and at least 100 feet away from any well. A cess-pool a large cement lined water proof tank, sunk into the ground, filled with a water tight lid and properly ventilated. It can recieve excreta as well as waste water. The cess-pool is emptied at regular intervals.
