New Council Board Charged
To Rescue Sports In Imo
…As Members Swing Into Action Immediately
The newly constituted Governing Board of Imo Sports Council led by their chairman High Chief Tony Rodney Ajaelu has been charged to ensure that the deplorable state of the sports sector is generally rescued, reorganized and transformed for good.
In an address presented at the inauguration ceremony which took place at the Dan Anyiam stadium and was made available to Trumpeta sports desk, the board members which was drawn from all works off life including the Nigerian Police and Armywith the state Acting Director of Sports Mrs Chizotam Aretola as their secretary.
The board was charged to find ways and means by which the state will improve on its sporting outings but above all His Excellency the Governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha wants them to reinstate sports and its administration where it will be viable, self-sustaining, and free of government sponsorship if possible and introducing the private sector to take over.
They were among many other issues charged to source a way to improve the welfare and standards of Imo state athletes which will in turn position them win more laurels for the state.
Also, the board will look into the issue of hostel for athletes(importance of games village) and sports development mission expected to start yielding results later this year in the next National Sports Festival in Calaber, Cross Rivers.
Meanwhile, the board members immediately after the inauguration moved into action when they went on an inspection tour of all the sporting facilities in the state starting with the Old Township Stadium were it all started promising to make a release on their findings soon.

The recently concluded Oru-West Unity Football Competition ably powered by the Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly and member representing Oru-West state constituency, Pharm Donatus Ozoemena has been adjudged as the best organized soccer championship in the state during the yuletide period.
This remark was made by no other than the honorable Commissioner for youth and Sports in the state, Comrade Kenneth Emelu during the closing ceremony of the three week championship on Wednesday January 8at the Mgbidi Sports Complex where he congratulated members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), for doing a marvelous job in putting together what he termed a championship of high standard recommending that the body should be retained to carry on the good job in the next edition as well as promoting the best player of the tournament, Okonkwo Daniel Chigozie from Nnepi/Eleh to have trials with Heartland fc.
In a special address rendered during the presentation of medals and trophies to winners, the donor, Pham Ozoemena, thanked all the participating teams for performing creditably while congratulating the winners admonishing the youths of Oru-West to continue in their support for His Excellency Owelle Rochas Okorocha and the Rescue Mission program as more developmental strides is on the way to imolites including Oru-West LGA.
The competition which was won by Mgbidi Ward 2 who beat Otulu on penalties 4 2 after the normal regulation times ended goalless saw the champions pocket N250, 000 while the second, third and fourth placed teams took home N200, 000, N150, 000 and N50, 000 respectively.
Chief Felix Idiga’s Unity Cup Ends in Style
The 2013 edition of Chief Felix Chidi Idiga Unity football competition for all the communities in the Twelve Local Government Areas of Orlu Senatorial zone came to its crescendo on Sunday January 5 at the playing field of Technical College Okporo-Orlu with Mbidi emerging as champions of the five month championship.
Addressing the crowd during the presentation of medals and trophies, the donor called on the youths of Orlu zone to always stay upright, hardworking and dedicated in all their endeavours, stating that football has become the fastest employing industry globally.
He further stated that with football acting as a basic unifying factor all over the world, many young youths have not just become prominent with the game but bread winners in their respective homes.
Chief Idiga who is the Chairman Managing Director of JAFAC Group of Companies admonished the winners not to relent in their efforts while encouraging the losers to stay focused as all hope is not lost promising that the next edition will be greater than this year.
He however pointed out that the gesture was not with any political motive but to help fish out the raw talents lying in the communities as well as to foster peace and unity among the communities
Eziama-Obiri Agog for Uche Nwosu’s Unity Cup Final
The maiden edition of Eziama-Obire Unity Football Competition ably powered by the Honourable Commissioner for land, Survey and Urban Development Comrade Uche Nwosu came to a colourful end on Friday January 3, 2013.
Sir Gabriela Anowai, caretaker Committee Chairman, Nkwere Local Government Area, represented the donor (who was unavoidably away to be with his wife and new born babies) performed the official kick-off closing ceremonies and formalities in the final game that saw Umuduru Fc getting the better of 4United Fc during the gamble of lottery and penalties after the regulation time ended in stalemate.
In his speech rendered on behalf of the donor, Sir Anowai noted that the competition was instituted among the villages of the community to gainfully engage the youths in a purposeful manner especially within the just ended yuletide periods as well as exposing the discovered talents to greater heights.
In a separate interaction with the PA to the commissioner, Okigbo Anannwa, the competition which started some time in December has been able to discover raw talents who will in future be like the Kam Nwankwo’s and Mobi Oparaku
He further revealed that the winners went home with the sum of N300, 000 while first and the runners-up pocketed N200, 000 and N100, 000 respectively.
