It was an exhibition of culture and tradition yesterday as youths from 27 LGA in Imo State Converged to flag off a one day youth Orientation Programme organized by National Institution for Culture Orientation (NICO).
The seminar held on the 20th November 2013 at the NICO South East Zonal office Owerri with the theme Cyber World, Culture and the Nigeria Youth which feature debate and prize giving as a good number of participants were given awards. The program was the 2nd edition in its public enlightenment programme for the youth and also the last of the formal activities mapped out for the year.
The coordinator National Institute for Cultural Orientation Mrs. Chioma Duru described the day as a significant day in the annual of NICO South East history. Stressing that the objective of the seminar is to analyze the challenges and the do and don’t of the World Wide Web (www).
Mrs Duru noted that INCO as an Institution which focuses and recognizes the strategic position of the youth as potent force for change with crucial role to play in preserving and promoting our culture which is fundamental in human development.
Fr. Prof. Jerome Ikechukwu, director of centre for Igbo studies Imo State University Owerri during the occasion commended the National Institute for Cultural Orientation for the programe which addressed cyber-crime. Stressing that it has become cankerworm in our society and pointed out that over 70% of the people involved in cyber crime are youth.
Fr. Okonkwo enumerated cyber crime to include Bank Fraud, Identity theft, internet pornography etc. he noted that if the youth can be taught in their mother tongue and given proper education the will shun social vices.
