A youthful-looking woman will be thanking God for saving her life and escaping the wrath of onlookers at the popular main market of Owerri residents, called Eke Onunwa, when she was caught allegedly stealing from one of the shops.
The young woman (names withheld) was at the verge of being lynched by the mob, but got rescued by some young men who ran to the rescue.
Trumpeta learnt that the young woman posed as a customer to one of the provision store dealers on the ever-busy School Road market shop. While she was negotiating with the shop owner and seller who entered into the shop to pick an item, the suspected thief allegedly picked some packets of soap and dropped it inside her bag.
Oblivious of the fact that the eagle-eyes of another trader caught her while stealing the packets of the soap, the young woman wanted to take a leave when she disagreed on price with the provision dealer. The trader who saw the woman engage in shop-lifting requested the thief to pay for the packets of soap she had already dipped into her bag. The revelation drew the attention of traders and passersby in the market.
Punches rained at the suspected thief and dangerous items were targeted at her before spirited young men within the market took pity on her before scaring her aggressors from further punching. The helpless young lady was however escorted outside the Ekeonunwa market.
The scene somehow disrupted commercial activities in the school road part of Ekeonunwa on Tuesday when people gathered to witness the show.
