Various Unions of Keke Operators in the State have resolved to unite and work together as one body under the Imo Pilot Transport Association.
This was part of the agreement brokered by the Mayor of Owerri zone, Chief Gibson Achonwa Njemanze (Oyiga), the House committee Chairman on Transport and patron to keke operators, Hon. Ikechukwu Amuka and the leadership of various Keke operators in the State.
Speaking on the importance for a unified Keke Operations, the Mayor of Owerri zone, Chief Gibson Njemanze (Oyiga) said the need to unite the various leadership of Keke Operators was aimed at improving their operations aimed at restoring sanity in the transport system in the State.
He said the need to harmonize various groups of the unions is in line with commitment of the Owelle Rochas Okorocha administration to ensure the best for keke operators in the State.
He maintained that Keke operators remain integral component of the Rescue Mission programme of His Excellency and this prompted the Owerri zone Mayorial office in collaboration with the House committee chairman on Transport to set up a 10 man committee to review all petitions and submission of aggrieved keke members.
Also speaking at the event, the House Committee Chairman on Transport, Hon. Ikechukwu Amuka commended the Mayor of Owerri Zone and various leadership groups of Keke operators in the State for successfully harmonizing their differences and decided to fuse into one union.
He urged them to observe and obey traffic rules at all times, adding that there must be harmony and orderliness amongst various Keke groups to make the industry more attractive. He called on the Ojukwu led Imo Pilot Association to set up task forces with a human face that will ensure discipline among Keke operators in the city.
In his speech, the President, Imo Pilot Association, Comrade Augustine Ojukwu commended the Mayor of Owerri Zone and the House committee chairman on Transport for their efforts to regularize the operations of keke operators in the State.
