No fewer than eight persons met their untimely death in the early hours of yesterday when four vehicles had multiple fatal accidents on Owerri-PortHarcourt Road, by Avu Junction, Owerri West LGA.
Our correspondent, who ran into the crash few minutes after the sad incident occurred, could not behold the sight of the victims who remained helpless.
Though, the cause of the accident was not be ascertained yet, but on the spot assessment of victims revealed that about eight persons were found dead.
Four vehicles, a container-carrying Trailer, sand filled Tipper, articulated Truck and a Volvo car were involved in the accident that occurred at about 6.30am Thursday. While the damaged front of the articulated truck was found at the rear bucket of the tipper, the tumbled trailer with container found itself on top of a commuter Volvo car fully loaded with passengers.
It was a pitiable scene with all the occupants of the Volvo vehicle trapped without any form of rescue. While there was no effort from any quarter to rescue victims holed up in the articulated truck, five passengers including the driver suffocated to death under the compressed container, while those still alive then cried for help, which was impossible, as the entire container was ontop of the Volvo car.
However, passers-by and onlookers who visited the scene were worried that three hours after the incident, no concrete rescue measures was on ground as the trapped surviving ones who were breathing when the incident occurred later died.
