Tragedy struck at Ikembara Community in Ikeduru Local Government Area on Sunday 22nd September, 2013, as Mr Calistus Okoro machetes his only younger brother, Mr Chibuike Okoro, to death with a cutlass over alleged possession of portion of land belonging to the family.
According to an eye witness account, trouble started when the younger brother (now deceased) requested his elder brother, Mr Calistus Okoro, to give him his own portion of their land which their late parents left for them before they died which the said Calistus later refused.
It was learnt that in order to have his request granted, the late younger brother went and reported the matter to their traditional ruler, HRH Eze Emmanuel O. Iwuchukwu (the Mbarama I of Ikembara) who summoned the elder brother to appear for peaceful resolution within their communal context, but the suspected assailant declined to honour the invitation.
The eye witness further explained that on Sunday morning, when the late victim reminded his elder brother of the initial demand, he refused out rightly which resulted to a fight between them, but the elder brother however over powered the younger one and sent him to an untimely death with a cutlass.
Callistus’s action attracted the attention of the villagers who called in the police.
The slain body of the boy has been deposited to mortuary while the killer has been remanded in police custody for further investigation.
Unfortunately, village sources revealed that both Calistus Okoro and Chibuike Okoro were the only surviving sons of their late parents. They have only one sister who is now a victim of circumstance and in painful mood.
