The Nigerian Police Force created history as a 34 man contingent touched down in Belfast, Northern Ireland for the Biennial World Police Fire Games on Tuesday July 30.
The games which started yesterday and will last till August 10 is the first time the Nigerian Police will be participating in the biennial championship.
About 28 Athletes and 6 officials, led by the Force Planning Committee Chairman, CP Abimbola Macaulay, left Nigeria via the Murtala Mohammed International Air Port, Lagos Tuesday July 30 for the biennial World Police And Fire Competition open to Police agencies throughout the world.
Athletes from 70 countries are participating in the games and will be competing 66 sporting events, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, martial arts, wrestling, judo and taekwondo.
In a good will massage to the contingent, the Inspector of Police, MD Abubarka, charged them to be good ambassadors of not just the Police, but the nation.
He enjoined them to conduct themselves creditably throughout their stay in Belfast, and further warned them to distance from drugs, as any athlete cut doping will be dealt with accordingly.
September 15, Chosen For Fed Cup Final
The Nigerian Football Federation has revealed the date for the grand-finale of the Federation Cup that will once more be played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
According to a release from the Glass-House Thursday, September 15 was chosen as the date for the most glamorous Football Competition in the nation since 1945.
The final had been scheduled to hold on July 28, but the football authorities could not harmonize the calendar so the final game will be played on the mentioned date.
The Teslim Balogun Stadium will be the venue for the final. Akwa United, Lobi Stars, Warri Wolves and Enyimba qualified to play in the semifinals of the competition after eliminating Heartland (cup holders), Akwa Starlets (giant killers), Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United respectively.
Last year, Heartland defeated Lobi Stars in the final to lift the coveted trophy two consecutive time’s haven beating Enyimba in 2011 all in the venue.
Only Rangers International of Enugu has done a straight triple winning of the cup in 1974,’75 and ’76. Heartland were hoping to achieve the same feet before the penalty lose to Akwa United who incidentally eliminated another Oriental team (Rangers) in Owerri.
Among the four semifinalist’s only Enyimba has won the trophy before which means that a possibility of a brand new champion could be on the wing.
