Police Smash Gunmen Who Specialize In Robbing Bank Customers In Owerri

Men of the Imo State Police Command yesterday recorded a major haul in their quest to get rid of criminals in the state when luck ran out of a gang of suspected robbers in the state capital.
Trumpeta learnt that a customer had withdrawn a huge sum of money from a commercial bank in Owerri on Bank Road and boarded a keke to Wetheral Road.
Oblivious of the fact that he was being trailed by a two man gang that had been keeping watch over him, the victim alighted from the keke and in the process the bag containing the money was snatched from him.
Shocked at the attack, the victim raised alarm which attracted passersby before a hot pursuit followed that attracted the police.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Department said that “At about 1400 hrs, the Command Ambush Squad smashed a syndicate that specializes in looking around banks with motor bikes to snatch money from people. This group snatched the sum of N960,000 (Nine hundred and sixty thousand naira) from a victim (names withheld) at Cherubim Junction, Wetheral Junction, Owerri. As they were fleeing on their bike, the Eagle eye of the Command Ambush Squad sighted them and shot them on the chick. They dropped the money and the bike while one was arrested the other fled. But the suspect has made useful information that will lead to the arrest of the rest”. The suspect is Chidi Ezeala from Amuri Omanze in Isu LGA aged 30 years. Items recovered from him include one Qlink motor bike, and the N960,000 (nine hundred and sixty thousand naira) cash.
