Due to the decline in the reading and writing culture by students in Imo state, the Director of schools in Owerri Zone 1- of the Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB), Lady (Mrs) Onyearugulem has stressed the need for students to embrace the reading and writing culture in the state if indeed Imo must be better.
She made the call in Owerri during the launching of their magazine “ZSEMBO 1 GALAXY” Lady Onyearugbulem while presenting the maiden edition of the magazine said that essence of their efforts is to use the magazine to re-awaken reading culture and induce creative writing among students and members of the public. She added that improving the reading and writing culture in our society will have multiplier effect in achieving Governor Okorocha’s Rescue Mission Agenda in the educational sector.
In a separate interview, Lady Mrs Onyearugulem said that the various social networking sites and computer games have recently overtaken reading and writing in the students noting that poor performance of students can easily be traced to it.
Speaking in his opening remark, the Chairman of the occasion Professor Uba Nnabue (Dean, faculty of Law) encouraged by student to inculcate the habit of reading with the view of the state government’s effort towards education through the free education of the rescue mission of Okorocha’s administration.
He however re-emphasized the damage so far done by social net working sites, adding that most students even in the university now uses abbreviations, slangs and other colloquial languages while chatting and use same to even do their assignments.
Also speaking, a senior management of Secondary Educational Management Board (SEMB) (Mrs) Victoria Iknwuagwu stated that the era of forcing the children to read their books has passed as the need to formulate new and attractive strategies to get the student reading should be incorporated.
The magazine reviewer, Prof Iwuala presented ZSEMBO 1 GALAXY magazine as a high quality magazine that will propel the educational sector in Owerri zone-1and supplement class-room teaching.
Commending the value of the magazine, Prof Iwuala urged the editors and members involved in the publication to continue to maintain the standard and quality of the ZSEMBO 1 GALAXY.
