Obulimba Unity Cup enters round of 12
The ongoing Obulimba Owerri- West Unity male football competition powered by Hon.Innocent Eke (master chef), member representing Owerri- west at the state House of Assembly has entered into-knock out stage (round of 12).
According to the Chairman of the local Organizing committee, Mr. Vincent Elekerem, the round of 12 games will begin on Saturday march 9 and 10 at the three venues Avu, police training field- Umuoma and Orogwe.
Twelve teams will be battling it out for the 8 places in the quarter finals. Two teams each nqualified for the round of 12 games from the group games namely, Amokohia Ubi, Obinze, (defending champions), Umudibia (last years runners up), Ihiagwa (Donors community), Ohii, Umuoma, Irete, Emeabiam, Eziobodo, Umuguma, Umualum and Orogwe made it through.
Surprisingly, last year’s 2nd runners up Oforola failed to make the round of 12 as they lost their last group game 0 – 3 to Irete at the police training field.
Mr, Elekerem in his assessment of the competition so fare thanked the communities for exhibiting maturity in all the games beliving that the subsequent games will also follow the same trend as one of the objectives of Hon. Obulima (the donor) is to use football to unite all the communities in Owerri – west.
He then thanked Hon. Obulimba for his quality representation at the state House which is quite visible in all the numerous developmental infrastructures he has attracted to Owerri- West, urging the youths to make good use of the quality opportunities provided by Obulimba to become useful to themselves and the society at large.
The round of 12 knock – out games will see mouth watering games as Umudibia and Obinze will luck horns in a repeat of last years final game.
Amakohia Ubi who reached the semi’s last year will take on Ihiagwa that have vowed to win the trophy this time.
Eziobodo will meet Orogwe that failed to win any group game but still qualified. Ohii will trade tackle with Emeabiam and Umualum in the last game sizes up with Umuguma while the quarter finals are billed for march 16 and 17.

ACP Kigigha Charges Zone 9 Police Athletes to be good Ambassadors
About 179 Athletes representing zone 9, in this years Nigeria Police Games have been charged to be good ambassadors of the Nigerian Police Force and the zone.
Addressing the police men and women at the shell camp Police training field Owerri were, the departure ceremony took place, ACP Felix Kigigha, Area Commander in charge of Owerri Urged the athletes to always persevere in their sporting activities in other to come out victorious.
The CAF / FIFA referees physical training instructor Commended the entire contingent for training very hard within the period they have been in Camp urging them not to forget the five S factor which is key to success for every athlete.
He pointed out that if S raised to the power 5, is fully utilized (1) strength, (2) skill (3) speed, (4) stamina and (5) strategy, success will be assured.
In a chart with Imo Trumpeter, ACP Kigigha who is a member of the Sports Technical Committee, stated that though, they (zone 9) couldn’t start their Camping early enough as other zones did due to administrative lapses, the athletes were able to make up on their own and are all in good shape to do the Zone proud in Port Harcourt.
He further assured that his officers are beaming in confidence to come home with medals especially the games they are the defending Champions like football male and female, wrestling Volleyball, Basket ball, and Tug of war male and female.
Kgigah further revealed that for the first time since the inception of the games, Rugby will be debuting at the competition.
The 10th edition of the Nigeria police games officially Kicked – off on Sunday March 3 with the opening ceremony while most of the events like team games started yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Force Headquarters, Abuja are the defending Champions but will be facing stiff oppositions from zone 2 and zone 9.
