A pall of grief has fallen over Lorji Nwekeukwu Autonomous Community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, following the death of their revered traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Eze Stephen Nwabueze Ugorji, the Orji Ukwu I of Lorji Nwekeukwu. The announcement of his passing, at the age of 90, was made by his illustrious first son, Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji, during a community leaders meeting at the Royal Palace. Dr. Ugorji was the pioneer commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs in Imo State, under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s first term.
The news of the death of HRH Eze Ugorji has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving residents heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with the loss of their beloved king. Where shall we find another like him, many lamented out loud.
The meeting, attended by titled men and members of the Eze’s cabinet, witnessed a poignant display of sorrow and respect. The air at the Royal Palace was thick with emotions as mourners openly wept, crying out, “We will miss you greatly!” Their lament echoed the sentiments of the entire community, reflecting the profound impact Eze Ugorji had on their lives.
Speaking during the solemn gathering, the President General of the Lorji Nwekeukwu Autonomous for Progress, Chief Barr. Charles Akwete, delivered a heartfelt eulogy, stating, “The Iroko has fallen.” His words painted a picture of a leader who embodied strength, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his people. Chief Akwete eloquently described Eze Ugorji’s life, highlighting his hard work, passionate commitment to his community, and his deeply respected, fulfilling life. The President General’s words emphasized the immense void left by the Eze’s passing, a void he said was already being difficult to fill.
In recognition of the significant loss and in accordance with tradition and customs, a one-year mourning period has been declared. This period of mourning will encompass a suspension of all major cultural festivals, including the vibrant Igbamawu celebrations, with the exception of traditional weddings, which will be observed on a significantly smaller scale. The community has also established a Burial Committee to plan and oversee the funeral arrangements. This committee, chaired by the esteemed Prof. Paddy Njoku and boasting the expertise of Dr. Prosper Ukaegbu as deputy chairman, and Sir Fraedinad Ibechodoh (Pro) among other respected members, will work diligently to ensure a fitting tribute to the late monarch.

The community now embarks on a period of mourning, remembering the life and contributions of a king who ruled with dignity, compassion, and unwavering love for his people.
