Gov Rochas Okorocha of ImoStateand the Imo State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu, were among recipients at 2012 Imo Women Day Celebration held at Heroes Square, Owerri with theme – Imo Women: Together We Build. Gov Okorocha was awarded for his selfless and tireless efforts to make education free in the state and for appointing Mrs Nkechi Onumajulu, Imo State Head of Service, while Speaker Uwajumogu got his award for ensuring smooth relationship between Imo Govt and the legislative.
Earlier,ImoStatefirst Lady, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha said that the celebration is a special day for women as it is an annual event for taking stock of their achievements. She said that they have had several gatherings for months to achieve success in the state. She pointed out thatImoStateis the only state in the world where education is free. She also thanked Gov Okorocha for selecting a woman as Imo State Head of Service and asked for more representation of women in the state government.
Some of the activities that garnished the celebration were the novelty football match played between women of the Imo House of Assembly and women of the executive arm of government which the women of the House of Assembly won through penalties and the beauty pageant contested by selected women from the 27 local Govts of the State. The women also displayed their hand works and farm products.
Some of the dignitaries present at the event include: Gov Okorocha and his deputy, Jude Agbaso, Speaker Benjamin Uwajumogu and Chief Leo Stan Eke (CEO Zinox Computers) who was the Chairman of the event, Mrs Nkechi S. Onumajulu (Head of Service,ImoState), Hon Ann Dozie (Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development) and a host of others.
