Flood Victims Reject Govt N5m, Hall Project

Trouble is brewing in some of the Communities in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta LGAs affected by the recent flood that ravaged the area.

At the centre of the controversy is the manner the committee set up by the Imo State Government intends to utilize the N400m meant to ameliorate the sufferings of flood victims in Imo.

While protesting that no meaningful Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta indigenes were accommodated in the committee chaired by Dr Obi Njoku, the people have threatened to reject the commencement of a hall project meant as a rehabilitation camp and the planned extension of N5m to each of the affected communities.

Most of the flood victims who spoke to our correspondent in Abacheke, Umuorji, and Opuma towns in Egbema area of the LGA rejected the idea adding that it is an extension of the state government’s insensitivity to the plight of the victims.

“How can they give each community affected by the flood a sum of N5m as well as build a hall? What is the rationale behind sharing of money and building of hall? We expect the committee to have an interactive session with flood victims after proper assessment of the havoc wrecked by the natural disaster, a victim, Sunday Nwabo stated.

Meanwhile, snakes and reptiles have invaded Abacheke Community by tormenting the residents. In the last count, five persons have fallen victims to snake bites even as mosquitoes have taken over the area.

Other dangerous reptiles like scorpions and grass cutters have also become a permanent feature in the place.

The inability of the committee and state government to fumigate the entire area despite several promises is said to be responsible for the reptiles’ invasion.
