The seeming discord and cold war among members of the Imo State House of Assembly is translating to an alarming dimension with some lawmakers said to be plotting for change of leadership.
Reasons for the reported plot to sweep away the leadership of the House led by Speaker Ben Uwajumogu could not be properly confirmed as at press time but Trumpeta investigations revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, lawmakers in the House and their sympathizers from the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, have concluded arrangements to impeach Uwajumogu as well as his Deputy, Donatus Ozoemenan.
Our reporter who has been monitoring developments in the House revealed that after initial efforts to sack the Speaker proved futile, the PDP members have joined forces with APGA colleagues to form majority against Uwajumogu’s APC. Trumpeta learnt that several meetings have been held among the plotters since the weekend to perfect the strategies for the execution of the impeachment expected to hold this week as the plenary session resumes.
Apart from the negative publicity the House has attracted in recent time over certain unpleasant issues, bordering on negative developments the offensive lawmakers may have sought changes to redefine the battered image of the State Assembly.
The unexpected sacking of the member representing Oru East, Greg Okwmili, following what the Speaker termed advise from the Attorney General via court order and the controversial accusations leveled against the Speaker’s office by Uwajumogu’s former media aide, Ikenna Samuelson, may have triggered off fresh plot to destabilize the unity of the House. A tinge of drama is expected to occur when the House resumes this week for plenary.
Meanwhile, ominous signs of danger were noticed inside the chamber during the last deliberation of the lawmakers as a mysterious-looking lizard appeared.
The lizard with rope tied round its waist was spotted hanging on the curtain walls of the chamber on the fateful day. Though members and workers of the House kept mute but it sent dangerous signals of impending doom in Imo House.
Trumpeta was reliably informed that while the member representing Ehime Mbano, same zone and federal constituency with Kingsley Dimaku will take over from Uwajumogu if the action is finally successful executed and Ozoemena will give way to Ikenna Emeh of Isu state constituency for Speaker and Deputy.
However, sources from Uwajumogu end dismissed the impeachment treat as an action that is dead before arrival.
A competent source from the Speaker’s office who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that members have no reason to be up in arms against his boss adding that the present House has had best moments under Uwajumogu to warrant such mutiny as speculated.
The Speaker’s aide who preferred anonymity noted that his principal is backed by law to act on Okemili’s case stating that Iwuoha’s accusations are figment of his imagination borne out of the desire to blackmail the Speaker and his office.
“There is no reason for the said impeachment you heard. In short, it is a rumour. Uwajumogu enjoys the confidence of all members irrespective of party differences and they all parley together” he added.
