Charles Okafor Recieves Preachers News Award
Ace popular Nollywood actor Charles Okafor has received an Award from Preachers News International, a Magazine that preaches the message of the preachers at its 10th Anniversary ceremony for making movies that propagate the gospel.
Charles who spoke with enthusiasm at Villa Park Hotel, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos venue of the event recently said that the Award humbles him stating that if there is anything he was taking away, it was the fact that the Lord is saying to him that people are watching him. ” There are more eyes on me to continue to be on my toes in a certain way. So, I am honoured and I feel humbled to be identified in honour of this magnitude. But for me, its worth it”. He said.
He noted that he is not leaving circular movie as he is into advocacy films within the secular sector where he picks an issue with the view to redefining, re crafting and remaking the society.
He pointed that people have said so much about Juju and Voodoo in Nigerian films attributing this to be the product of the society. ” I want to tell you here and now that the script writer is a product of the society, there is nothing you see on television in our movies that is not a product of our society. If I do a ritual film for instance, it is because there are ritualists in the society because you cannot write in abstract.” He said adding that one cannot write a script out of what he does not know but rather, on things he relate to on daily bases. He explained that there are people who are very inclined to juju and voodoo and for the fact that one may not does not mean that it does not exist.
He however, asserted that we need to punctuate the treatment of juju and voodoo in our films and deal with them knowing that it has debilitating effect when its not handled with care. Explaining further, Charles said that we equally need to let the world out there know and see the good side of Nigeria even though we cannot completely do away with these films because for some, its cultural as 9 out of 10 Yoruba movies will always stick to that direction because its part of their world view. Citing gun and sex as part of the American world view. He stated that every society has its own challenges. ” In Africa, in Nigeria, this voodoo, juju thing might be our own challenges but that is not to say that it should continue in the manner that people have overtly incline to it”. He appealed that certain other good aspect of Nigeria should be exposed and sell so that people don’t begin to think that everything about Nigeria is juju.
On the other hand, Pastor Solomon Okorie, the publisher of the preachers News, Eastern Eye Magazine and the World Market Link said that the essence of the Award was to celebrate the magazine’s ten years of existence and recognize the key players in the Christian World.
